Asiago is the name given to the small township with a population of around 6500 and the surrounding plateau region which is known as Altopiano di Asiago and is located in the Vicenza province in Veneto region of the northeastern Italy. Asiago is close to the border between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige regions of Alps foothills. It is only about 100km from the bigger Italian cities of Trento on the west and Vicenzo in the south.
The place is known internationally as the origin of delicious Asiago cheese. However Asiago was the site for a major battle between Italian and Australian forces in World War 1. Asiago is also a huge winter sport destination along with being the home of the Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago.
There is a development of more than 300km of cross country skiing runs in Asiago and a lot of international athletes come here for training. They use the same snow which held the Jr Northern Skiing World Championship in 1996 on the second occasion. The landscape offers not only cross country skiing but downhill skiing is also possible. The local people have created many opportunities like the wonderful ski runs having different difficulty levels. All this is matched by incredible and fantastic panoramas with the ski lifts fitting in perfectly. You can find the ski instructors at the local bars and restaurants that are located close to the ski runs.
You may also go horse riding in the snow. The ice skating along with sledge dog sleighing competitions are only few of the winter sport activities available to the guests for an exciting holiday. You can also go mountain biking as Asiago offers many varieties of routes, environments and scenery. There are limitless opportunities to move around.
The new Extreme Sports Center at Asiago called Team Sport Emozione provides opportunities for the people looking for some excitement to do rafting, Para gliding, hidrobob and bungee jumping.
